Wellness A-Z: Z=Zest for Life

Z=Zest for Life
We've all heard some people described as an individual with a zest for life, but what exactly is zest?

Zest is defined as living life with a sense of excitement, anticipation and energy.  Life is not just going through the motions for someone who has zest, rather it becomes an adventure.  People with zest view challenges as opportunities and are not easily discouraged.  Zest is a concept of courage and involves acquiring the motivation to complete challenging situations and tasks.

Excitement and energy surround a person with a zest for living.  They perform tasks wholeheartendly, with a sort of positive attitude that is lacking in others.  They shine, they sparkle, and everyone is attracted to them!  It makes a difference and it starts inside - in you!

ZEST IS ABOUT BRINGING EXCITEMENT WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU GO AND SHARING IT WITH OTHERS.

What seperates this type of individual from the crowd?  Living well and self-care.  It's just that simple.  If you want to be a person who stands out from the crowd, you must care for yourself in a way that allows you to do that.

People low in zestfulness put everyone else before themselves and as a result, lose their own sense of being.  This lack of self-care leads to unwellness and a low self-esteem and a bad attitude in general.  Zestful people simply enjoy things more than people low in zestfulness.

WAKE UP EVERY MORNING, RAISE YOUR GLASS OF LEMON WATER IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR AND SAY, "TO LIFE... TO ZEST!!!"  - Jen Lasher Breen

If you want to be a zestful individual and take good care of others in the bargain, it is absolutely crucial that you put yourself first!  Self-care is the only way to assure that you are the best you can be for people around you.  It sounds backwards, I know - but it is not.  It is not selfish behavior to take care of your health.  In the end, those around you will thank you for taking the time for yourself because you will not only feel better, but you will work better with others and they will find you a joy to be around.

An alkaline lifestyle is not about competition.  I do not wish to be better than anyone else.  I do wish to be better than I was yesterday!  My goal is to have a happy HbA1c and a happy blood pressure and cholesterol level.  I'm getting to the age where I could easily be put on a medication for cholesterol, but I'm hoping that because I've embraced this lifestyle, I'll not have to be put on cholesterol-lowering medication.  I'm happy to report - so far, so good!

DON'T SIT THERE TRAPPED IN YOUR LEMON SKIN... ZEST IT!!!
- Jen Lasher Breen

I want to feel good and be my very best for those around me.  I don't know exactly how to explain it, but when I feel my very best, it really does not matter what sort of drama unfolds around me.  I'm able to say that I've done my very best in a situation and if someone else is not happy, then maybe it's because perhaps they have not done their very best for themself.  If a person claims to be unhappy with me, I ask myself if it's really me they are unhappy with or if they are just unhappy with themself.  It changes your entire outlook on everything when you get your own "health act" together.

Hopefully you have enjoyed this little series, Wellness A-Z.  This is your gold-engraved invitation to hop on the wellness wagon with me.  Eat more alkaline based foods, give up the soda and drink lemon water, exercise a half hour every day and get plenty of rest.  Listen to your body because if you don't, you will eventually have no choice but to listen when it finally breaks down on you!  You only have one body - be kind to it!
