Treasures

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  - Matthew 6:19-21

Through this difficult 20 year journey with Tyep 2 Diabetes, I've learned one very important lesson.  Priorities change in life depending on the need at hand.  If I have a thousand dollars in my checking account (yeah, I'm dreaming) but I'm wrestling with my blood sugar, that money is not really a top priority.  My immediate need is to get my blood sugar under better control so I can enjoy my life.  Does it take money to enjoy life?  Well, certainly it does!  The necessities of life are not free.  They never have been, and they never will be.

Unfortunately, money is a necessary evil.  Test strips and medications cost money.  Even healthy fruits, veggies and protein shakes cost money.  I can't buy any of it with my good looks.  LOL!!!  Wow, who let my daddy's spirit into the room?  He used to say that all the time.  "You can't buy that with your good looks, ya know!"  I can almost hear him laughing.  Ok, daddy, you've made your point!

It's true.  While we don't seek to hoard money, we want to be comfortable financially.  I think most people would agree with that.  It's when stuff becomes the central focus of your life that trouble begins.  While I'm leaning on my "dad-isms", I'll throw in another one.  My daddy used to say, "People are much more important than things."

Stuff does not love you back - but people do!  As I say, I'm not opposed to having plenty of money for the necessities in life, but when excess stuff gets in the way of relating with other people (which can happen), it's simply not worth the price you've paid.  I've enjoyed writing this blog for that very reason.  The feedback I have received via facebook is absolutely phenomenal!

I have been "friended" on facebook and get messages every day from folks all over the world!  It has been the most gratifying and humbling experience for me!  No amount of money can do that!  This blog is a total God-thing.  It is my treasure and it is where my heart is.

So, yes there are some moments when I feel as though I have truncated treasure, but it all depends on your definition of "treasure", I suppose.  If you measure your treasure in dollars and cents, then mine is a little anorexic.  Through this blog, helping other Type 2 Diabetics realize that this disease can be managed - I'm so blessed to have the opportunity to do that!  Even though I am by no means a medical professional, but a person living with the disease, these writings serve to encourage and offer ideas for others traveling this path.  This is how I measure my treasure and I am very rich indeed.

God knows my heart and He knows my motives and my intentions.  He has been my guide through this wellness maze and He knows the future because He's already there.  No, I don't know how He does that - that's why He is God and I am not.  It has been my joy and pleasure to share my journey so that others can gain some encouragement and hope to better manage their Type 2 Diabeties.

Wellness is attainable for me.  This disease can be controlled with some faith and a lot of hard work and discipline.

Money, position, pride and power seem so important - until they're not.  At the end of their lives no one says, "I wish I spent more time at the office."
- Michael Josephson

Decide what means the most to you today.  Perhaps it's time to evaluate your meaning of "treasure" and prioritize your greatest need in life.  If you are a Type 2 Diabetic, the greatest need is without a doubt to have the best possible control of your disease.

The greatest wealth is health.  - Virgil

This is one good little preacher!  Andrew Larson, may God bless you!

It's ironic that after such an uplifting blog topic this day should be such a bummer.  Sometimes that's just how things work out.  Today is NATIONAL HAVE A BAD DAY DAY!!!!!!!!!!  I can't believe we celebrate this - but here goes.  I suppose the first really bad day was in the Garden of Eden when that no good dirty snake in the grass got Eve to bite into that apple.  Then Adam blamed her when he talked with God about it.  Well - blame the woman.  Go ahead, we can take it!  Then the next bad day was probably when the entire earth got flooded and some were not issued the gold engraved invitation to board the ark.  Yeah - that'd be bad.  So if you do have a bad day, just remember that at least your bad day won't be recorded in a book to be read about by millions of other people down through the ages.  Perspective is a great thing, isn't it?  Have a really really bad day.
Wow...  that felt weird.
